Director Tim Burton shares his thoughts on the Batsuit nipples from Batman Forever. Long before Matt Reeves' The Batman or Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, the Caped Crusader was brought to the big screen in 1989 by the gothic mind of Burton. After Batman starring Michael Keaton as the title character and Jack Nicholson as the Joker was a critical and financial success, Warner Bros. asked Burton and Keaton back for Batman Returns, which released in 1992 to similar fanfare, with much praise going towards Danny DeVito's performance as The Penguin.
Returns was followed by a stand-alone sequel in 1995, Batman Forever, which saw Val Kilmer replace Keaton as Bruce Wayne, with Joel Schumacher stepping in as director. While Burton's Batman films were defined by their darker tone, Schumacher took inspiration from Dick Sprang's comic books and the 1960s television series, one of the most infamous choices being the nipples carved onto Kilmer's Batsuit. This drastic shift in tone received mixed reviews from critics, but Batman Forever was still a success at the box office. Schumacher returned for 1997's Batman & Robin which saw Clooney don a Batsuit with more pronounced nipples. The notorious sequel was panned by critics and disappointed at the box office.
