Top Gun: Maverick has now become the highest-grossing Tom Cruise movie of all time at the worldwide box office. For many years, Cruise has been one of Hollywood's most internationally marketable movie stars. After his breakthrough roles in Risky Business and the original Top Gun, Cruise went on to star in more high-profile dramas including Rain Man and Jerry Maguire. In recent years, he has turned his attention back to huge blockbuster projects, including the Universal horror reboot The Mummy, the time loop sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow, and the Mission: Impossible franchise, in which he performs death-defying stunts as superspy Ethan Hunt.
On May 27, following several years of pandemic-related delays, his long-awaited follow-up Top Gun: Maverick was released in theaters, cementing his status as a perennial box office draw. He reprised his role from the original film opposite Val Kilmer as Iceman, with new cast members including Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jake Picking, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Manny Jacinto, and Monica Barbaro. Top Gun: Maverick's opening weekend was the highest of Cruise's career and the sequel quickly became the actor's highest-grossing movie of all time in the United States. Now, Maverick has broken another Cruise record.
