Top Gun: Maverick is officially the biggest movie of 2022 at the domestic box office. Over three decades after Tom Cruise first played Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in Top Gun, the long-awaited sequel that was often delayed due to COVID-19 finally arrived a few weeks ago. Top Gun: Maverick was released in theaters over Memorial Day weekend to not much competition and on the heels of career-best reviews for Tom Cruise. The result was the longtime box office draw also having the highest opening weekend of his career.
After overperforming during the four-day weekend, Top Gun: Maverick debuted at over $160 million domestically. This was enough to take Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness out of its three-week reign at the top spot at the box office. Unlike just about every other blockbuster to ever come from Hollywood, though, Top Gun 2's box office has not seen a quick decline in interest. Ticket sales are through the roof for the summer event film, which has now put Tom Cruise back on top.
