While objectives are how you progress, completing them isn't necessarily top priority at every moment. If you see a great route to take while in a region when you could choose an objective route, it can sometimes be better to go with the former. Just don't delay your objective too long.
For example, you receive the Spyglass after winning your first battles and reaching the Inn. The Spyglass tells you to look for an «elevated vantage point,» so equip it to your stagecoach then look for a Watchtower while in a region like The Tangle to progress.
