Dark and Darker, the extraction-based multiplayer fantasy game that was briefly one of the top early-access games on Steam, has had to resort to extreme measures after the game received a DMCA takedown. Unavailable on Steam, developer Ironmace has been forced to distribute the latest build of Dark and Darker through a method normally associated with game piracy: torrents.
"We apologize for the radio silence. Unfortunately, due to our current situation, we must be careful," wrote Ironamce in a message on its Discord channel. "Rest assured that we are working around the clock to safeguard the continuation of Dark and Darker. Unfortunately, due to the complexities of our situation, especially across international lines, it is taking time to resolve the Steam situation. In order for us to keep our promise to our fans we've had to go old school this time."

Dark and Darker was removed from Steam after developer Ironmace was accused of stealing game assets from a canceled Nexon fantasy RPG. Ironmace is largely populated by former Nexon employees that were allegedly fired for leaking game code and breaking confidentiality agreements. Nexos said that Dark and Darker used game assets from an unreleased game that was internally called "P3," which was eventually canceled in favor of a more modern survival game.
Ironmace has denied any and all allegations of stolen code or assets, saying that most of Dark and Darker used publicly available assets from the Unreal marketplace. "All other assets and all game design docs were created in-house," said Ironmace CEO Park Terence Seung-ha back in February. "ABSOLUTELY NO stolen assets or code were used to make our game."
