In the killing game of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, making friends is the last thing on certain characters' minds. Protagonist Makoto Naegi, however, believes that it's important to maintain bonds and trust. To that end, the player can build bonds between Makoto and his classmates, perhaps even forming deep friendships. These bonds can actually be important in-game, as they unlock abilities that players can employ during class trials.

Each student has their own likes and dislikes, and since time together is limited in the killing game, there's little room for trial and error.
