Dungeons & Dragons’ big celebration of the whole of its fifth edition now has a release date, with Vecna: Eve Of Ruin coming this May.
This campaign features the return of one of D&D’s most famous villains, the lich Vecna, as you do battle across the entire multiverse that brings multiple of the game’s biggest settings into a single campaign.
Revealed during last year’s D&D Next, we already knew that Eve of Ruin would be something of a last hurrah for D&D ahead of its revised core rulebooks at the end of the year. Now, Wizards of the Coast has lifted the lid on what, exactly, that entails when it drops on May 21, 2024.
Described as a “high-stakes adventure” for levels ten to twenty, the defining feature of this book is that it brings together most of the settings we’ve been playing in since Fifth Edition launched in 2014. The Forgotten Realms, is a given, but Wizards has also confirmed that Spelljammer, Ravenloft, Planescape, Dragonlance, Eberron, and even Vecna’s home of Greyhawk will all be locations your party heads to in your pursuit of Vecna.

The Forgotten Realms was the focus of the Phandelver adventure, while Planescape, Dragonlance, and Spelljammer all had their own releases in the last two years. The others have been away a bit longer, with the gothic horror of Ravenloft last being seen in 2021, and both Eberron and Greyhawk in 2019.
We don’t know just how much of a role these settings will play in Eve of Ruin, nor just how some of the older settings will be updated with the new design sensibilities Wizards has adopted in the last few years.
Vecna in D&D is very different to the monster named after it in Stranger Things. In D&D, Vecna is a lich whose goal is to gain control of every world. In Stranger Things, it’s an entity from the Upside Down who was simply named Vecna by the D&D-loving protagonist.
Though Eve of Ruin is being positioned as something of a celebration of the fifth edition we’ve been playing for
