A sequel to Nier: Automata might have been teased by series creator Yoko Taro at the Nier London Concert. The Nier franchise has been a bit of a breakout hit in the last couple of years, thanks to Yoko Taro's eccentric and unconventional game design and writing. Despite its recent success in other media forms, like an anime adaptation, novels, and concerts, some fans wonder if there will be a new mainline AAA game set in the same universe, or a direct follow-up to Nier: Automata.
Nier: Automata's creator has been clear about his desire to create a new mainline entry in the series ever since the release of Nier Replicant in 2021. Post-Replicant's release, however, Taro had been working on a bunch of other smaller projects, such as mobile RPGs, the Voice of Cards series, and more. Fortuntely for fans, they may have gotten their first tease of a sequel to the beloved Nier: Automata.
This teaser was shared by ResetEra member SanTheSly during a discussion about Nier: Automata recently surpassing 8 million units sold. SanTheSly shared an anecdote about how they were in attendance at the Nier concert that took place in London earlier this month, where Yoko Taro and Square Enix president, Takashi Kiryu, were in attendance. SanTheSly claims that as the concert was ending, Taro took to the stage, stating that if fans wanted a sequel to Nier: Automata, they should give the loudest applause of the night. Naturally, the room erupted into claps and cheers immediately.
As Yoko Taro is known for being a bit of a mellow, if eccentric person, it's entirely unclear how serious Taro was during the event. Things get a bit muddier, as SanTheSly elaborates that, during the story of the show, the word «REPENT» was shown repeatedly throughout its dialogue. The final instance of its appearance used the unique spelling of «R3PENT,» similar to the formatting of Nier: Automata's alphabetical endings.
