CM Punk Injury Reportedly May Be Worse Than Originally Thought For AEW
CM Punk will be out of action for AEW after injuring his foot, and a recent report indicates the surgery he required cleaned up more issues than originally anticipated. The Best In The World spoke to fans through tears on the June 3 edition of Friday Night Rampage, telling them he was hurt and required surgery. AEW decided to allow him to hang onto his World Championship throughout the procedure and recovery process.
Punk hadn't even been able to defend his title since winning it from Hangman Adam Page at the Double Or Nothing pay-per-view on May 29. The company is in the process of crowning an interim champion while he recovers, which will culminate at the AEW X NJPW: Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 26. Jon Moxley will be AEW's representative at that show, while Hiroshi Tanahashi will fight for NJPW. Whoever wins that bout will be named interim world champion, and will unify that title with Punk when he's able to wrestle again.

The timeline on when, exactly, that could happen is murky at this juncture. Especially with Dave Meltzer reporting in the June 13 edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that "(w)hen they did the surgery, they found the injuries to the bones were worse than they expected, but with the surgery, they were able to fix everything up." Meltzer continued, writing that "(t)here is no timetable for his return past the belief it will be before the end of the year."
