Continuing a big year for Christmas-themed games in 2023 is Roblox; the game platform is getting a new experience based on Jon Favreau’s holiday comedy Elf, developers announced Wednesday. While you may not be able to step into Buddy the Elf’s poulaines to reconnect with your long-lost father in Roblox’s Elf North Pole Workshop experience, you will be able to visit Santa’s Workshop and hang with some North Pole pals.
Roblox players can don elf hats and do some free work for Santa as either Wish Taker, Toy Maker, or Gift Wrapper in the Elf North Pole Workshop. Those roles contribute to the success of Santa’s Workshop, helping to collectively juice the Clausometer with holiday spirit. Players will also be able to explore the Candy Cane Forest and rub virtual elbows with the likes of Mr. Narwhal, Leon the Snowman, Arctic Puffin, Polar Bear Cub, and Baby Walrus. (It’s unclear if you’ll sail the Sea of Swirly Twirly Gumdrops.)
Developer Supersocial worked with Favreau’s creative studio, Fairview Portals, to make the Elf-inspired experience, so it has the director’s blessing. Aesthetically, it hews closely to the movie, or at least the portions of Elf set in the North Pole. The Elf experience will have a stop-motion animated style, with a frame rate-limiter and tilt-shift effect that its creators say represents a first for Roblox.
Elf film composer John Debney also worked on the project to bring some musical authenticity to the experience. Gameplay-wise, Roblox players can expect “innovative physics-based play,” according to a news release from Fairview Portals and Supersocial.
