An unexpected blend of genres will headline Touhou Spell Carnival on PS5 and PS4 later this year, as the release fuses bullet hell chaos with cerebral tactics.
The press release reveals: “Touhou Project is a bullet hell shoot-’em-up game created by ZUN’s group, Team Shanghai Alice. Set in the isolated land of Gensokyo, various incidents, known as disturbances, arise from different causes. The story follows the main protagonist, Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of Hakurei Shrine, as she and her friends resolve these disturbances.”
Despite the bullet hell leanings, gameplay unfolds in a grid-based arena, and you’ll need to use your strategy smarts to “graze enemy bullets and unleash special skills in one simultaneous, action-packed battle”. You’ll need to think carefully about your positioning and approach, and utilise your enemy’s weaknesses to your advantage in order to succeed.
You can check out the announcement trailer above, although it’s worth reiterating there’s no concrete release date attached to this just yet beyond a vague 2024 window.

What an interesting combo. Lots of stuff I like separately, but all mixed together.
I guess I'll need to read a review or two before I commit, but I'm intrigued!

A 45 second video with less than 10 seconds of gameplay. Kind of makes me wonder if it's heavily story driven. That would be okay, if the story is good.
Super hyped for this. These guys making a touhou game is a match made in heaven.
