PC builders can now add a lightsaber to their desktops with a Star Wars-themed storage drive.
Seagate partnered with Disney’s Lucasfilm on the special-edition PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage drives, which go on sale today. They feature a miniature, glowing lightsaber on the side, adding some posh RGB lighting to any PC desktop. Each unit also comes with three faceplates, meaning buyers can swap between lightsaber designs used by the Jedi knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker or the infamous Sith lord Darth Vader.
"A low-profile heatsink helps dissipate heat and reduce thermal throttling, while you harness up to 7300MB/s of speed that this SSD has pulsing inside," Seagate says.
The other perk is that owners can customize the RGB lighting on the lightsaber and pick a color other than red or blue, although the PC’s motherboard will need a 5V addressable header to enable the LED control.
On the downside, the drive costs more than a typical 7300MB/s Seagate FireCuda NVMe storage product, which goes for $119 to $209.99(Opens in a new window) depending on storage capacity. The 1TB version of the Star Wars-themed SSD drive is $184.99 while the 2GB model is $289.99.
Seagate plans on selling(Opens in a new window) the products through retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and Walmart, although the listings have not yet been posted online.
For HDD buyers, Seagate released(Opens in a new window) Star Wars-themed internal hard drives in November. The drives feature characters like Darth Vadar, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker, along with some customizable RGB lighting on the product’s fringes. In our review, we found it to be a "solid-performing platter-based drive that should appeal to any fan of Star Wars or Grogu."
