A24’s Civil War had a strong $25.7 million opening weekend, the best ever for an A24 picture, per Deadline. Those numbers topped the opening of political thrillers such as Zero Dark Thirty ($24.4M) and World Trade Center ($18.7M) and also marked a career-best for director Alex Garland.
Despite Civil War’s boost, the trade notes that the marketplace was down 48% from last year when Super Mario Bros. dominated the charts. This week’s only new releases were The Long Game ($1.39M from 1,030 theaters), the re-release of Shrek 2 ($1.35M from 1,512 theaters), and Suga Agust D Tour ‘D-day’ ($2.2M from 787 theaters).
Otherwise, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned $15.4M (-50%) in its third weekend, raising its domestic total to $157.9M and worldwide haul to $436.6M. Coupled with Dune: Part Two’s $683.9M WW take, Warner Bros. has eclipsed $1B at the global box office in record time.
Last week’s new releases struggled to stay afloat in their sophomore frames. Monkey Man collected $4.1M (-595), bringing its domestic total to $17.7M, while The First Omen earned $3.78M (-54%), raising its total to $14.6M.
This week sees the release of the Henry Cavill/Alan Ritchson action pic The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare followed by Zendaya’s Challengers a week later. The next major release is The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, which is expected to open somewhere between $20-40M.
