In light of a recent social media backlash following the latest patch release for Baldur's Gate 3, a representative of Larian Studios has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to address the game's modding community directly. The tweet also gives fans a glimpse of something big coming to Baldur's Gate 3 later this year.
Baldur's Gate 3 has a thriving modding community, with dedicated fans creating additions to the game both blessed and cursed, covering everything from characters' appearances to subclasses to clothing to weapons. Following the release of Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 6 and its subsequent hotfixes in quick succession, many mod creators took to social media to declare that they just couldn't keep up.
While sharing the announcement for Baldur's Gate 3 Hotfix 19, director of publishing Michael Douse spoke directly to players and modders. The tweet expressed Larian Studios' love for the Baldur's Gate 3 modding community and announced that Larian is working to bring «robust» mod support to the game for PC and consoles. Though it's unknown when exactly this support will be added, fans can expect it to go into effect sometime later this year. In a follow-up to the original tweet, he then posted that Larian has a system they plan to use to implement the cross-platform support, however it still needs to be tested and isn't yet finished.
This announcement is an exciting one for the Baldur's Gate 3 fanbase, but is especially welcome to its mod creators, who have had trouble staying up to date with the game's rollout of patches and hotfixes. Each update released by Larian Studios can cause the game to become incompatible with mods already in use by Baldur's Gate 3 players, rendering them unable to play modded campaigns until the mod is updated by its creator. Mod support would mean less catching-up to do for creators upon an update's release, and therefore less downtime for players using mods.
