One of the twelve new subclasses coming in eighth patch is Bladesinging, a spellblade option for wizards. It's a fan favorite in its form sinceit was first introduced in the second edition. The subclass combines the wizard's intellect with dextrous mobility and grace, often alongside the features of elves for maximum effect.
There are already a number of subclasses in that work well for spellblades, from the eldritch knight to the war cleric, and even one other coming in the eighth patch: the hexblade. However, Bladesinging is distinct both for its reliance on multiple ability scores to be effective and its unique method of wielding weapons. It will bring some fun new options for players to try out on their next characters.
While other spellblades, like the pact of the blade warlock, often consolidate their features to only focus on one or two ability scores, the Bladesinger requires a lot of its users. It needs high intelligence for its spellcasting and high dexterity for its weapon attacks, and, on top of that, it needs a pretty high constitution to stay standing in melee combat. Most Bladesingers dump their strength and charisma, but wisdom is often useful for passing saving throws, especially in, meaning that a Bladesinger's ability scores are very divided.

It makes the barrier to entry for this subclass pretty high, but it also means they get exponentially more powerful as they level up. While multiclassing isn't viable using this subclass, it is hardly necessary, as it brings all the features a mage or martial character could want. Plus, wizards in this game are already incredibly powerful with their ability to learn from spell scrolls in , so this subclass is shaping up to be a powerhouse in the game's third act.
