Last week Bloomberg reported that Apple is working on a brand new version of the iPad Pro, and now we’re learning a bit more about what to expect from the device, more specifically its keyboard.
In his weekly Power On newsletter, Sunday Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a more laptop-like keyboard to launch alongside the new iPad Pros in 2024. According to Gurman, the top case of the keyboard which surrounds the keyboard itself will be aluminum, giving it a look similar to what we see on Apple laptops.
He notes that the move to aluminum will also make the keyboard sturdier. He also says the change will only apply to the area around the keyboard. The exterior part of the keyboard is expected to maintain the same cover material as the current model. The keyboard is also expected to continue to have one USB-C port.
Last week we learned that the new iPad Pro will likely come in both 11 and 13-inch sizes. The new models — currently code-named J717, J718, J720, and J721— are also expected to all use M3 caps and have OLED displays, the same display that Apple has used on the iPhone since 2017 with the launch of the iPhone X.
Gurman noted that sales of the iPad have slumped in recent years. The revamped version of the tablet may help encourage current iPad users to upgrade their devices.
Apple currently has an event scheduled for September 12 where it is expected to announce the iPhone 15.
