The teaser trailer previews FX‘s iteration of the Aaron Hernandez story as the upcoming Ryan Murphy series prepares to debut in September.
Consisting of ten episodes based on the Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez podcast, in addition to the Football Inc. podcast from Wondery and The Boston Globe, American: Sports Story charts the rise and fall of Aaron Hernandez as he’s played by Josh Rivera. It explores his identity and family, his career, and, ultimately, his suicide and overall legacy.

The 42-second American Sports Story teaser trailer highlights Hernandez’s success on the football field, with pundits and commentators praising the former New England Patriots athlete. But as the teaser progresses, the tone shifts. Hernandez, seen only from behind, catches a football, but he’s in handcuffs. The commentary shifts, with tense moments and dark quotes from the upcoming series. At one point, a character is heard saying: “You disgust me.”
The adaptation will debut on Tuesday, September 17. It will also be available to stream on Hulu.
Along with Rivera, who played Chino in West Side Story, the cast includes Jaylen Barron as Shayanna Jenkins, Lindsay Mendez as Tanya Singleton, Ean Castellanos as DJ Hernandez, Tammy Blanchard as Terri Hernandez, Tony Yazbeck as Urban Meyer, Patrick Schwarzenegger as Tim Tebow, Thomas Sadoski as Brian Murphy, Jake Cannavale as Chris, and Norbert Leo Butz as Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Stuart Zicherman, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Carl Franklin. Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy of Wondery are also executive producers, as are Linda Pizzuti Henry and Ira Napoliello of The Boston Globe. It is produced by 20th Television.
