Amazon is adding to the 18,000 job cuts it confirmed in January by laying off another 9,000 employees.
In a blog post(Opens in a new window) today, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that "we intend to eliminate about 9,000 more positions." The job cuts will be made over the next few weeks and the majority of the layoffs will occur in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team, Amazon's People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT Solutions) team, advertising team, and the Twitch team.
Nobody was expecting another round of job cuts so soon, but Jassy explains that some teams have only just finished an analysis of their operation. The lay offs will take a few weeks as final decisions have yet to be taken in some areas as to which roles will disappear.
Jassy said anyone losing their job will receive a package including "a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support." At the same time, Amazon intends to continue a limited hiring program "in some of our businesses in strategic areas where we’ve prioritized allocating more resources."
The news follows Amazon's decision this month to close eight of its cashierless grocery stores, and Meta's decision last week to lay off another 10,000 people and close 5,000 open roles. Twitch CEO Emmett Shear also resigned last week(Opens in a new window) after 16 years at the company, stating at the time that it felt like the right time to move on. Now it seems quite a few of his colleagues will be moving on with him.
