Full disclosure before we advance: This writer has not read any of Akira Toriyama’s 2000 manga Sand Land yet. So if you’re reading this, you may be think “Well, if you have no experience with the manga, why are you writing about a video game adaptation of it?” The answer is because any game adapting something a different medium like manga, movies, comics, television, et cetera has the potential to be a gateway to that franchise, and if it’s a really good game, then it can appeal to more than just fans of the source material. So when it was revealed during Summer Game Fest that Bandai Namco and developers ILCA would be creating a video game based on Sand Land, I wanted to check it out despite not knowing much about the source material, simply because it looked really impressive.
Set in a desert world where humans and demons co-exist, Sand Land follows the story of the Fiend Prince Beelzebub, Sheriff Rao, and an older demon, Thief, as they hunt for the Legendary Spring in order to help put an end to a massive water shortage. As seen in the trailer below, this involves a lot of insane tank, mech, and assorted vehicle action, intense combat as Beelzebub uses their superhuman strength and abilities to take on groups of enemies, a large world with lots to explore and a ton of giant monsters and colorful characters…really, you have to ponder why this wasn’t adapted into a video game until now. Sand Land is set to come out for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms, and stay tuned for future information on this classic manga adaptation as it arrives.
