Frontier Developments has released the first gameplay trailer for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, their upcoming real-time strategy adaptation on Games Workshop’s current fantasy wargame setting.
Frontier has also announced that an open beta test will be taking place from 7th – 10th July. A second beta is also planned
The trailer shows off the Stormcast Eternals clashing with the Orruk Kruleboyz for supremacy of Ghur, the Bestial Realm. We get to see units clashing, glimpses of the tussle for Arcane Conduit control points and more in the multiplayer match up, with a push to then strengthen them with Bastions and build up through the tech tree. There’s some shades of Company of Heroes or Dawn of War to the structure.
But what is Warhammer Age of Sigmar? This was a grand reboot of Games Workshop’s fantasy setting in 2016, with the Old World consumed by Chaos, and Sigmar’s ascendancy to godhood allowing him to create new realms for different races to live in. These, however, are constantly besieged by Chaos, and so the Stormcast Eternals were created from the souls of fallen soldiers to defend them.
The reboot saw Warhammer Fantasy stepping toward the style of Warhammer 40,000, stepping away from regiments to smaller units and a more attritional style of warfare. The Stormcast Eternals are basically fantasy Space Marines, as well.
Realms of Ruin will be released simultaneously across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the game having been created with both mouse & keyboard and controller play in mind.
