I've written before about the various types of trainers you encounter in Pokemon, and wondered, befuddled as a Psyduck who just hurt itself in confusion, why we play as the most boring and generic ten-year-olds in existence. Quite why we need to be a ten-year-old at all is a matter for another day, but in a world of Firebreathers, Jugglers, and Rockers, it's weird that we're either Boy In Cap or Girl In Hat. Enough about that though. I'm over it - just about. Instead, it's time to talk about one of the best, most underrated trainer classes - Ace Trainers. I hope they get more love in Gen 9.
Ace Trainers were once known as Cool Trainers, but have realised that the least cool thing you can do is announce to everybody that you're cool, and so are now the much less braggadociously named Ace Trainers. They are essentially trainers who are very good at Pokemon. While Fisher Bob will send out wave after wave of Magikarp in the vain hopes of splashing you to death, Ace Trainers have tactically assembled teams of strong Pokemon, and they use viable movesets and healing items, while having a much more intelligent AI system than the usual schmucks.
