A new documentary about Hideo Kojima will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival

Now don’t get me wrong, Hideo Kojima is a visionary game creator and should be very much admired, but I’m starting to think that he likes himself just a teensy bit too much. He’s been running his own podcast about him and his thought process with his celeb friends popping in to say how fab he is, and now there’s a documentary about him.

Now that would be interesting if it were not for the fact that the documentary is produced by Kojima Productions, his own company. I get the idea this won’t be the most critical of documentaries and will just be another glowing endorsement of how fabulous he is, complete with usual roster of celeb friends.

“Guillermo del Toro, Nicholas Winding Refn, Grimes, George Miller, Norman Reedus, Woodkid, Chvrches, and many others,” are set to appear in this “visually captivating documentary” which “gives a rare insight into Hideo Kojima’s childhood as well as his creative process from launching his own independent studio and creating Death Stranding”.

You will note there’s a fairly large gap between “childhood” and “launching his own independent studio”, the Konami years are clearly going to be avoided.

Kojima is currently working on the Death Stranding movie that will not be a AAA action adventure.  “Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom,” says executive producer Alex Lebovici.

There’s also Death Stranding 2, the long-expected sequel to Kojima Productions’ PlayStation exclusive. The game is coming to PlayStation 5.

The trailer seems to skip us forward a fair bit, with Norman Reedus’ Sam brought back out of retirement.
