10 years later, every Smash Bros. fighter finally has an Amiibo
Nearly ten years after the collection began, Nintendo has finally released the final character in the Super Smash Bros. Amiibo roster.
Kingdom Hearts’ Sora, the final DLC fighter for Switch entry Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, was released on Friday, meaning that the entire roster for the series is now available in figurine form.
The Smash Bros. Amiibo series launched Nintendo’s toys-to-life business back in November 2014. Initially, just 12 figurines were available: Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu, Kirby and Marth.
A month later, the series expanded with six more characters: Zelda, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Little Mac, Pit and Captain Falcon.
Nintendo steadily expanded its Smash Bros. Amiibo roster with additional characters, but supply issues, new characters added with Ultimate in 2018, and the covid 19 pandemic, meant that it’s taken until now for every character to be released.
Reacting to Sora’s release on X, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai wrote: “Now that all the fighters have been made into amiibo, I guess my work on Smash Bros. Ultimate is finally coming to an end. Thank you for your hard work.”
Sakurai recently commented on his future in the video game industry. In an episode of YouTube show Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, Sakurai addressed whether he’s still actively working in the games industry and if that is his interest in the future.
“I’m still creating games for the time being, but I’m also making this YouTube channel,” Sakurai said. “I’d never done anything like this before starting, so in a way, you could say I haven’t exactly stayed put either.”
