Kamala Khan makes her long-awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic (and TV, we guess) Universe with Ms. Marvel(Opens in a new window) on Disney+ this week. If you’re not familiar with the Pakistani-American defender of Jersey City, here’s a quick list to take to your local comics shop or Marvel Unlimited app to read up on what you need to know.
Introduced by G. Willow Wilson (one of the only practicing Muslim writers in comics) and artist Adrian Alphona, Ms. Marvel’s first solo series debuted in 2014 with Kamala, who we met previously as a Carol Danvers superfan, getting exposed to the Terrigen Mists and discovering she has the ability to change the size and elasticity of her body parts. The character was fully formed right out of the gate, and Wilson ably balances Kamala’s many different cultural identities with her secret one. It’s a super solid comic that deserves all the praise it got.
It’s looking like the MCU version of Kamala is going to get her powers in a different way, but the Infinity storyline had big repercussions on the Marvel Universe for several years, so it’s worth revisiting. When Thanos comes to Earth to hunt down Thane, he comes into conflict with Black Bolt, the leader of the Inhumans. During that fight, a bomb is detonated that releases the Terrigen Mists—the substance that causes the Inhumans to transform into their unique selves—all over the planet. This sparks a wave of chaos as every human with some Inhuman DNA is affected, including our heroine.
