The first battle between the Hulk and Wolverine has gone down in history, not just because it is one of the most epic fights between two of Marvel’s deadliest heroes, but because it also marked Wolverine’s very first appearance in Marvel Comics. However, while the battle was one that won’t be soon forgotten, it wasn’t exactly as it seemed. There was a secret purpose behind the fight that is absolutely mind-blowing– one that redefines Wolverine’s history as both a solo hero and a member of the X-Men.
James “Logan” Howlett aka Wolverine first joined the X-Men in Giant-Size X-Men #1 by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum. In that story, the original X-Men find themselves in perilous danger so Professor X travels the globe recruiting other mutants to save them with the hope that afterwards they will permanently join the team themselves. Among those Xavier approaches is Wolverine, who debuted in Incredible Hulk #180 and #181 by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe. In that story, Wolverine is sent by the Canadian military to take down the Hulk, who is engaged in a fight with the monstrous Wendigo. While Wolverine loses that fight, the fact that he is able to go toe-to-toe with the beast at all is massively impressive and certainly gets Xavier’s attention. Professor X issues him an invitation to join the team of mutant heroes, and Logan quickly accepts.
