Bows and crossbows are an integral part of 's stealth mechanic, allowing players to snipe enemies while remaining unseen. They also scale with the Water virtue, which increases the player character's ability to remain hidden
However,bows and crossbows aren't just for stealth builds — encourages players to mix short- and long-range options. Players can equip up to two melee and two ranged weapons at a time, and switching between them is instantaneous. Even ranged-focused players will want to pick up Water-scaling melee weapons in 's early game to keep their options open, while melee-focused players will want to put a few spare points into the Water virtue. Until a recent patch, however, a quirk of bow and crossbow ammo made leveling ranged stats seem a little less worthwhile.

The version 1.04 update of, released on March 17, 2023, adds a feature that automatically restocks bow and crossbow ammo at checkpoints. There's a limit to how many arrows and crossbow quarrels players can carry in. Once that limit is reached, players can still pick up ammo, but instead of going into their inventory, it'll go directly into their storehouse. This is a pretty common Soulslike mechanic — , for instance, had the Bottomless Box, which players could access from bonfires to restock their consumable items. The Soulslike reduces the difficulty by automatically restocking the player's inventory, including ranged weapon ammo, from their storehouse whenever they rest at a Battle Flag.
