As Diablo 4’s first PTR week comes to an end, players almost unanimously agree — next Season’s itemization overhaul is a big win! However, the upcoming changes have raised an interesting question: are Rare items going to be useless?
Diablo 4 Season 4 Elixir Revamp Recruiting Diablo 4 Rogue Writers
In the Season 4 PTR, Rare items only dropped with 2 random Affixes, while Legendary items always dropped with 3 Affixes. If this continues to be the case during Season 4, then Legendary items will always have greater potential over Rares.
However, it may not be that simple. The new Masterworking system will progress Tempered Legendaries through 12 tiers of upgrades — with tiers 4, 8, and 12 granting an additional 25% stat boost to a random Affix. If all of these random bonuses happen to land on a single, build-defining Affix, then the compounding stat boost would be massive!
Due to the random nature of Masterworking, there’s a case to be made for crafting with Rares early on, specifically because they have fewer Affixes. Fewer total Affixes means a better chance that these random upgrades will apply to a single desired Affix.
Alternatively, Rares can be sold to a vendor for gold or salvaged at the Blacksmith for crafting materials — specifically for Veiled Crystals. Even a garbage Rare is worth at least the sum of its parts, and during the PTR Veiled Crystals were in short supply.
