Wicked Digital Sales Numbers Revealed, Sets Record for Universal
is continuing to bring in huge amounts of money for Universal Pictures.
Wicked was released in United States theaters in November 2024. The film, which stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland, was released on Premium EST (digital ownership) and PVOD (digital rental) on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Wicked has made over $70 million in digital sales — numbers that, more often than not, are not released to the public — in the United States and Canada during its first week on PVOD and Premium EST.
“That is the biggest first day and biggest first week for a Universal theatrical title going to PVOD, and on its first day did double the business of Universal’s next-best performer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” The Hollywood Reporter’s article notes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $44 million during its first week on PVOD.
“Universal consistently releases its larger tentpoles in the home after their fifth theatrical weekend, but it decided to wait another week and turn Wicked into a New Year’s Eve event for families after it played exclusively in cinemas for 39 days,” the article explains. “…Wicked still has a two-and-a-half-month exclusive premium home entertainment window before it goes to NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock.”
In total, Wicked has made approximately $683.2 million at the worldwide box office during its theatrical run.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked also stars Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.
The sequel to Wicked, Wicked: For Good, has been given a November 21, 2025, release date in the United States from Universal Pictures.
