For the first time, The Bachelorette has taken the unprecedented path of having two leads, Rachel Recchia and Gabby Windey, but this has been problematic not only for them, but for the men as well. Rachel and Gabby are best friends, and they are navigating the uncharted waters of this journey together. Although most of the attention has been on why it is wrong for Rachel and Gabby to be pitted against each other, especially after what they went through on Clayton Echard's season of The Bachelor, the new format is also unfair to the men.
The season began with the men meeting both women at the same time, and then accepting roses, which meant that they were interested in pursuing both women. Some of the men decided almost immediately which woman they wanted to date, but others were torn between the two of them. When Rachel and Gabby felt that this arrangement was no longer working for them because they felt that the men had too much control, they abruptly decided to change the rules. They felt that the men had all of the power, and they wanted to shift the decision-making back to them. On the latest Bachelorette episode, host Jesse Palmer announced to the men that the cocktail party would be cancelled and that they would have to decide who they wanted to pursue: Rachel or Gabby. If they accepted a rose that night, it would be for either Rachel or Gabby exclusively.
