The first film in the prequel series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is the best-performing film both commercially and critically. However, since then the franchise has encountered some turbulence, being met with more criticism and diminishing returns at the box office.
On the other hand, Harry Potter remains one of the more popular franchises in modern cinema. The wizarding world in film began in 2001 with the release of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone movie. This film spawned seven sequels, ending with the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. However, with the failures of its spin-off series, speculation began on whether the Harry Potter franchise would be negatively affected.
