Rainn Wilson would like to reprise his Star Trek: Discovery role as Harry Mudd in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Harry Mudd has been one of the most popular recurring characters in Star Trek ever since his introduction in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode «Mudd's Women» in 1966, where he was played by Roger C. Carmel. The smuggler and conman has since made several more appearances in the Star Trek universe, most recently played by Wilson for a couple of episodes in Discovery.
Wilson, best known for his role as Dwight Schrute in the hit series The Office, has been spreading his wings and taking on roles significantly different from Dwight, the quirky assistant to the regional manager at a paper supply company. This includes the iconic Mudd character in two season 1 episodes of Discovery, «Choose Your Pain» and «Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.» Wilson's take on the classic character is masterful, making especially the latter episode both comical and high-stakes, fitting the tone of the show while standing out as unique.

Now, Wilson wants his Mudd character to continue in the Star Trek universe by appearing in Strange New Worlds, the spinoff series of Discovery. Wilson tells The Big Issue that he emailed Akiva Goldsman, one of the creators of both shows, with his request. "I said, 'Hey, bring back Harry Mudd. He would fit right in,'" Wilson recalls. The timing of Strange New Worlds within the Star Trek universe would certainly allow for the possibility of Mudd bumping into the USS Enterprise, but it is not as simple as that.
