Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Paul Wesley recently discussed William Shatner's inspiration regarding his take on the iconic role of Captain James T. Kirk. Strange New Worlds is the latest series in the vast multi-generational science-fiction Star Trek franchise following its CBS rebranding led by Alex Kurtzman with Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. Set five years before Star Trek: The Original Series, when Captain Kirk takes command of the USS Enterprise, Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew on the Federation flagship.
With Wesley's casting in Strange New Worlds, he will be the third actor to have taken the role of famed Captain Kirk. Shatner introduced the character in 1966 with The Original Series as a suave, tough, yet deeply emotional leader. He continued with the role until the character's death in 1994 with Star Trek Generations. The franchise saw a cinematic reboot with Star Trek (2009), which saw Chris Pine take the role of Captain Kirk in an alternate timeline.
