Warning! Spoilers for Strange New Worlds season 1 finale below!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Akiva Goldsman recently explained the season 1 finale's Star Trek: The Original Series reference. Set five years before The Original Series, Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew of the USS Enterprise before Captain James T. Kirk takes command. Following Alex Kurtzman's rebranding of the science-fiction franchise, Strange New Worlds adopted a classic episodic structure, helping the series become the highest-rated Star Trek entry on Rotten Tomatoes.
The season 1 finale saw Captain Pike encounter an alternate timeline version of himself who managed to escape his horrible fate while saving the lives of the doomed crew-mates. However, Future Pike revealed that his actions have dire consequences for the universe at large. He is then transported into the future where his path crosses with Captain Kirk (Paul Wesley) during the events of the popular The Original Series episode «Balance of Terror.» In the original episode from 1966, Kirk and the USS Enterprise battle a Romulan Bird-of-Prey warship resulting in the destruction of the enemy. However, with Pike overcoming his fate in the alternate future, he attempts diplomacy which results in a catastrophic war that will kill millions.
