Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Akiva Goldsman recently addressed the future of Star Trek television crossovers. Beginning in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, CBS sought to revitalize the multi-generational science-fiction franchise for television with writer-producer Alex Kurtzman leading the charge. In 2018, Kurtzman signed a five-year deal to focus on the franchise, later extending the deal to 2026.
Since Kurtzman's appointment, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and its latest series, Strange New Worlds, have been released. The franchise shows no signs of slowing down as CBS has additional series planned for the near future including a Section 31 show with Michelle Yeoh in the lead role, a Starfleet Academy show aimed at a younger audience, and a limited series centered around Khan Noonien Singh. Kurtzman previously stated that he wants to greatly expand the universe, opening it up in a similar vein as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
