A rematch between the two MonsterVerse alphas would be a terrible idea for Godzilla vs. Kong 2. Since the next MonsterVerse movie has been described as a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, speculation is mounting that the story will involve the two Titans coming to blows once more. However, whether or not it’s actually about a rematch remains to be seen.
Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is confirmed to be in development at Legendary Pictures. Adam Wingard, who directed the preceding crossover, will return to helm the next movie with Dan Stevens attached to star. For now, no official story details have been released. Earlier rumors pointed toward it being a Son of Kong adaptation, but that’s far from the only road the movie could take. Another scenario involves Godzilla and Kong resuming their rivalry. Godzilla asserted his dominance and beat Kong, who seemingly submitted to the alpha when he dropped his axe after beating Mechagodzilla. While it’s true that the two amicably parted ways, this outcome didn’t rule out the two renewing their rivalry in a future MonsterVerse crossover.

A rematch in Godzilla vs. Kong 2 can happen, but it’s not a favorable scenario for the sequel. In fact, the notion of the two fighting each other again comes with some major problems. Godzilla vs. Kong promised – and delivered – an answer to a classic giant monster movie debate in an exciting fashion. Finding out once and for all who would win between the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island was without question the movie’s biggest selling point. Godzilla vs. Kong 2, on the other hand, can’t have the same appeal because this issue has already been settled.
