Mads Mikkelsen is set to star in the upcoming historical drama King’s Land. Based on the bestselling book The Captain And Ann Barbara by Ida Jessen, the film tells the story of a military captain who, encouraged by the ambitious Danish King Frederik V, sets out to cultivate the inhospitable lands of Jutland in 1755. Produced by Zentropa with a budget of $8.5 million, the film will reportedly be one of the studio’s largest to date after major titles including Melancholia andThe Hunt. TrustNodisk is also attached to handle the project's international distribution.
Now, according to a report by THR, Mikkelsen will star in King’s Land as the determined captain Ludwig von Kahlen. Joining the 56-year-old actor in the new project is Raised by Wolves star Amanda Collin. The fellow Danish actor is touted to play Ann Barbara, a mysterious woman whom Kahlen encounters in the untamed heath.

Best known for starring in the likes of Casino Royale, Doctor Strange and, more recently, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Mikkelsen’s new project marks his second collaboration with director Nikolaj Arcel. The pair previously worked together on the Oscar-nominated period feature A Royal Affair, which was released back in 2012 to critical acclaim. Co-written by Arcel and Anders Thomas Jensen (Riders of Justice), Mikkelsen has described their vision for the new title as an “awe-inspiring” re-telling of Danish history. Louis Vesth (Nymphomaniac) is producing King’s Land, which is expected to begin production in September.
