The connection between Maz Kanata and Chewbacca, first teased via an offhanded reference in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, might finally be coming to fruition this September in the pages of Marvel's Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca.
Maz Kanata’s ambiguous relationship with Chewbacca has been hinted at since Kanata’s introduction, but nothing tangible came of it in the sequel trilogy. In The Force Awakens, Han Solo, accompanied by Rey, Finn, and BB-8, visits Kanata’s castle. She greets them and asks them where Chewie is while referring to him as “my boyfriend” and remarking “I like that Wookiee.” Solo explains to her that Chewie is currently repairing the Millenium Falcon, and the conversation moves past him. Unfortunately, the apparent history between the two is never expanded on, and the characters don’t interact again, apart from Kanata finally giving Chewbacca his medal at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
