A rematch between the two alphas of the MonsterVerse in Godzilla vs. Kong 2 could only work in one way. Although another showdown between the two Titans hasn’t been confirmed, the fact that the upcoming MonsterVerse movie is being described as a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has created the impression that the two will come to blows once more. But for now, it’s unclear what exactly the MonsterVerse has in store for the upcoming film.
Godzilla vs. Kong finally provided a definitive answer to the question of which monster would win by giving Godzilla not one, but two decisive victories over Kong. However, the events of the movie didn’t exactly end their ancestral rivalry. It’s important to note that the two deciding to part ways peacefully doesn’t mean they’re allies now. While Kong seemed to accept his loss at the time, it’s at least possible that this decision was driven by his injuries. When he recovers, he could want another shot at the Titan who nearly killed him. Not only that, but Kong may have figured out by now that Godzilla and his ancestors are the reason why his species was forced out of their Hollow Earth home in the first place.

While the setup for a rematch does exist, this scenario is made problematic by the notion that the MonsterVerse already solved the Godzilla vs King Kong debate. The sequel can’t succeed by simply copying the first crossover’s biggest selling point. To avoid their next fight feeling like an unnecessary addition to their MonsterVerse story, Godzilla vs. Kong 2 would have to do what its predecessor couldn’t, which is to pack it with monsters.
