Apple TV+'s Godzilla series has found its director in Matt Shakman. Since Godzilla vs. Kong was a box office hit, becoming one of the first major successes following the COVID-19 pandemic, Legendary Pictures has been looking to expand the MonsterVerse franchise in a big way. A sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is in development with director Adam Wingard returning, and a Skull Island animated series is in the works at Netflix. On top of that, it was announced in January that Apple TV+ is developing a live-action Godzilla series. Reports have suggested The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Wyatt Russell is being considered to play the lead.
According to Variety, WandaVision director Matt Shakman will direct the first two episodes of the planned Godzilla series. Shakman will also serve as executive producer. The series follows the aftermath of Godzilla's fight in San Francisco as the world discovers the existence of giant monsters. Much like the MonsterVerse's big screen adventures, the series will intersect with the mysterious Monarch organization.

SinceWandaVision, Shakman has been in high demand. The director is also set to helm Star Trek 4 which will reunite the cast of the previous three films and is currently set for release on December 22, 2023. With the release date of that film still a year away, it could be that Shakman will direct the first two episodes of Godzilla before prepping the next adventure for the Starship Enterprise. Directing Godzilla means the director will have directed installments in the MonsterVerse franchise, the Star Trek franchise, and the MCU, making for a very impressive collection for Shakman.
