With Pixar's Lightyear now released, the possibility of Lightyear 2 remains to be explored. A spinoff of the Toy Story series, Lightyear details the origin story of young astronaut Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans). As he and his commanding officer Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) and their crew become marooned on a distant planet, Buzz takes it upon himself to find a way back home. With Lightyear’s ties to one of the most successful animated franchises of all time, talks of its sequel are inevitable, considering that it provides another angle of the fictional universe.
Prior to Lightyear’s theatrical release, the movie garnered a generally positive reception. However, by Toy Story standards, Lightyear’s reviews are mixed. It might not be because the animated feature is bad on its own; the Toy Story movies have just set the bar too high for Lightyear. Critics praise its hyperrealistic animation and voice acting, especially that of Evans and Peter Sohn, who plays Buzz’s robot cat, Sox. Meanwhile, some reviews note its underwhelming villain, emotional weight, and confusing storyline that introduces the characters to unnecessary hindrances.

Typically, sequels are greenlit when the studio views the film as a commercial and critical success. During its opening weekend, Lightyear is predicted to earn at least $70 million in the United States and Canada.
