Sega's 90s mascot Sonic the Hedgehog is known for his impossible speed, whereas Kirby, Nintendo's lovable pink ball, is known for his insatiable appetite, which has led to some discussion over who would win in a fight. Unfortunately, while the question of who can beat one another in a duel has been played out in many a Super Smash Bros. match, Smash doesn't cover what these two can do at their ultimate power levels. Though their list of feats is cataloged across nearly every medium, it's best to pit their most impressive ones against each other — namely, speed and powers.
Sonic's speed has been calculated numerous times, with Sonic's movie version being as fast as 767 mph, Sonic Unleashed's in-game speedometer measuring over 3,000 mph, and the Archie era of Sonic the Comic marked the hedgehog exceeding Mach 15, which is about 15 times the speed of sound, or roughly 11,509 mph. All of these hit the speed of sound as the catchy Saturday morning cartoon title song suggests. But when compared to the game versions, there's evidence to offer under the right circumstances, the blue blur actually can go lightspeed, which could bode poorly for Kirby if the two were ever to come to blows.

Although 4Kids claimed that a duel between Sonic and Kirby would end in a tie (as has resurfaced in a video uploaded to Twitter by GamesCage — Hype Guy), looking at the details more closely hints at a different outcome. Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 have an accessory for Sonic known as the light-speed shoes. The friendly tutorial robot Omochao tells us that they allow sonic to go at the speed of light, which hits around 671,000,000 mph — a bit higher than the movie and later games suggest.
