Nintendo's mission to create the definitive Super Smash Bros.title in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has left director Masahiro Sakurai in the unique position of needing to downsize his next game in order to preserve the series' legacy. If the next title hopes to keep up the success of the franchise, it will need a new focus going forward. The sixth iteration of Smash Bros. will have to make significant changes to its characters' core mechanics and overall look if it seeks to reinvent the platform fighter.
Most would assume the more content, the better the video game, but Smash Bros.' ambitious «Everyone Is Here» announcement, which restored the entire series'roster, coupled with its extensive DLC fighters, resulted in a game with almost too much — 114 stages and 89 characters. Nintendo's strategy of releasing unique fighters over a set period of time was a clever marketing move that kept fans interested for years, but SSBU's volume of characters has become so vast that it creates a problem. The series cannot continue at this rate, as such a bloated cast of fighters and features could overwhelm fans, restrict further content, and make any new additions less impactful.

Masahiro Sakurai recognizes this, telling The Verge: «I think we’ve reached the limit, at least in terms of volume of content and fighters [...]we would have to shrink the roster.» If Nintendo goes forward with this plan, it will most likely mean a return to the series' roots. This means removing the concept of Echo Fighters like Daisy and Dark Samus, as well as alternate versions of established characters like Doctor Mario and Toon Link.
