Sonic Origins will be released on Steam, but there are no plans for a physical launch. Sega has however stated that it is aware of the demand, so this could change after its release this summer.
This comes after the game's recent trailer brought on a mix of hype and apprehension, with fans excited to return to the much loved classic titles, but disappointed with its various DLC and pre-order bonuses. Despite multiple releases of the collection already being confirmed - and not coming cheap - this also means that none of them will come with physical bonuses.

This news initially came from Sonic the Hedgehog social media manager, Katie Chrzanowski, over on Twitter (thanks, Nintendo Life). This was further explained in a livestream, but it was suggested that this plan could change. "There isn't one planned at the moment", Katie Chrzanowski explains. "I have seen a lot of comments asking for one, so the team has been made aware of that, there is a want for a physical release."
Sonic Origins is far from the only recent release to not be available physically at launch, and it isn't even a first for the blue blur. Last year, Sonic Colors Ultimate was only available digitally at first, finally releasing physically October 1 due to "unforeseen logistical issues". After that, GTA Trilogy copies were shipped out more than a month after its digital launch in November 2021. For Sonic Origins, a much smaller release than the upcoming Sonic Frontiers, to skip a physical run entirely would not be too surprising, if still disappointing for fans.
