The Hulk played a massive role in the final battle of 2012's The Avengers, but things could have looked very different. The Hulk is known to straddle the line between superhero and violent force of nature. In the film, his help was crucial when it came to fending off the Chitauri invasion brought about by Loki. However, it's not difficult to imagine a world where that wasn't the case. This means that the Battle of New York may have played out very differently if the Hulk was in the middle of one of his infamous rampages.
Just before Loki's invasion of New York, the God of Mischief's antics caused Bruce to Hulk Out aboard the helicarrier. The ensuing rampage led to a traumatizing chase for Black Widow, a direct clash with Thor, and eventually, the Jade Giant being ejected from the aircraft, "30,000 feet, straight down, in a steel trap," as Nick Fury described it. The movie suggests that the fall was enough to knock the Hulk out and cause him to revert back into Banner. However, the Hulk is an immensely durable creature and, depending on the day, something like that might also just anger him further.

Had the fall not been enough to knock the Hulk out, and his rampage continued in the city, the Battle of New York wouldn't likely have had such a happy ending. The Avengers would have been missing what was, at the time, their biggest gun. Without that kind of power, there's reason to believe it unlikely that every Avenger would have walked away from the ordeal, if any. Even that, however, is assuming they still won at all.
