Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 has looked pretty damn promising in every gameplay snippet we've seen so far, and now it feels like the hype for this long-awaited sequel has just reached new heights. Previews from Gamescom are starting to trickle online, and based on everything we've read, there's real reason to be excited.
Said previews all seem to heap praise on the game's combat system, which sees main character Titus combine extremely punchy guns with absolutely brutal chainsword slashes. Apparently, gunplay and melee attacks are more closely linked in Space Marine 2, so face-to-face fights often have you staggering enemies with bullets before finishing the job with your trusty chainsword. IGN says that the game «falls somewhere between Gears of War and DOOM», which certainly sounds like an enticing mix.
Next up, the title's visuals are getting a lot of attention. GameSpot mentions an impressive level of detail, in both the environments and the character models. The Gamescom demo is also incredibly busy, with the game rendering hordes of enemies across large, mud-and-blood-soaked battlefields. GameSpot's video preview is well worth a look if you want to see just how chaotic and visually intense combat can become (although it's worth noting that this is footage taken from a PC build of the game).
Obviously we don't know much about the story and how it's presented just yet, but again, these early impressions are very positive. Space Marine 2 doesn't have a release date at the time of writing — just a vague '2023' window — but we're hoping that confirmation isn't far off.
