Given just how many video games these days get potential movie or TV series announced that seemingly go nowhere beyond initial talks or take the longest time to develop, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about more than a few of them. Doubly so if news about an animated adaptation for a more white-hot game drops the very same day and overshadows any initial teaser for another game-to-show adaptation. Still, it was kind of a surprise to see the first initial trailer for thew Twisted Metal series make its debut, which you can check out below.
Based on the classic series of vehicular combat games for the PlayStation, the first teaser sees the introduction of our main character, John Doe (played by Anthony Mackie), as they pop in a little “Steal My Sunshine” before heading out across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, car-mounted guns a-blazing. It nicely sets the tone of the series as an action comedy, but then we also get our first look at an ominous threat lurking in Las Vegas in the form of series mascot Sweet Tooth (played by pro wrestler Samoa Joe and voiced by Will Arnett).
Written by Michael Jonathan Smith and also starring Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Haden Church, and Richard Cabral, Twisted Metal debuts on Peacock beginning July 27. Will it be the next The Last of Us? Realistically, probably not (though it still looks promising), but you should still be prepared for every major movie/TV site to try and make that comparison based on little more than the the two being post-apocalyptic shows based on hit PlayStation games. You know it’ll happen.
