The Thor: Love & Thunder trailer sets up the rampage of Gorr the God-Butcher, revealing he's already killed an alien deity called Falligar. When Marvel Studios hired director Taika Waititi to relaunch the Thor franchise in Thor: Ragnarok, they weren't especially concerned about comic-book accuracy. Nor, for that matter, was Waititi himself. "Here’s the thing about me guys, I did not really do my research," he explained in an interview with The Empire Film Podcast. "I read one issue of Thor as my research. Not even a graphic novel, one of the thin, thin ones. And by the end of it I was like, well we’re not doing that, let’s not really look at those anymore. Cool art, I love the art but I can’t stand the way everyone talks."
The Thor: Love & Thundertrailer confirms that's now changed. Although this is still an original story, with a lot of plot elements that aren't lifted from the comics, the main arc is clearly inspired by Jason Aaron's definitive Thor run. This introduced Gorr the God-Butcher, a character who'll be played by Christian Bale in Thor: Love & Thunder; it went on to transform Thor's ex Jane Foster into the Mighty Thor, which serves as Love & Thunder's main hook. But the similarities go further than that, with a single shot from the trailer lifted straight from the panels — and setting up Gorr's rampage.
