Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the filmmakers behind The Matrix franchise, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending, are auctioning off memorabilia from their films in support of the Protect & Defend Trans Youth Fund. Since The Matrix’s release in 1999, the Wachowski sisters have been known throughout Hollywood for their surreal, speculative films and TV shows. Many of their critically acclaimed movies are also wildly popular, including The Matrix, which grossed over $460 million at the box office. Both Wachowskis are trans women as well as vocal advocates of the trans community. In 2020, Lilly Wachowski confirmed that, as many fans had long theorized, she and her sister wrote The Matrixas an allegory for their experiences as trans women.
In recent years, there have been a great deal of anti-trans policies making waves throughout the country, many of which specifically target and attack trans children. Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which bans Florida teachers from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity, was signed by the Florida governor and takes effect July 1. In Alabama, the legislature passed a law that makes it a crime for doctors to provide gender-affirming care to trans people under the age of 19. Hundreds of such bills are pending in state legislatures, and the Protect & Defend Trans Youth Fund, a fundraiser founded by Ariana Grande, aims to support organizations fighting back against these policies. Ariana Grande is raising money for groups like Southern Arizona Gender Alliance and Tennessee Equality Project, and she will match the total amount raised, up to $1.5 million.
