American Idol has crowned a new winner, and country music singer Noah Thompson was more surprised than anybody to hear his name called as the champion during Sunday's finale. The historic 20th season concluded on Sunday, May 22, with a jaw-dropping three-hour finale. Noah was declared the winner after receiving more of America's votes over the two other finalists, country singer HunterGirl and pop artist Leah Marlene. The contestants each performed a Bruce Springsteen song and an original song before Leah was eliminated in third place halfway through the show. Noah and HunterGirl each concluded their night of performances with a repeat of a song they did during the season.
Noah had no plans of auditioning for American Idol. His friend and co-worker Arthur signed him up and made him go to the audition. Noah crooned his way into the judges' hearts by singing «Giving You Up» by Kameron Marlowe and earned a golden ticket. During the season, Noah was praised for his growth as a singer and performer, as well as his ability to take a song and be creative with it, as he did during his final performance of the season where he reprised his cover of «Stay» by Rihanna that he originally did during Hollywood Week. Noah also has a 1-year-old son that motivated him throughout the competition.

In an interview with USA Today after his big win, Noah admitted that he went "numb" when host Ryan Seacrest called his name as the next American Idol winner. "It blew me away. I just didn't know how to feel," he said. Noah didn't come into the finale expecting to win, as he knew that any of the other contestants had a great chance of winning.
