With today’s PS5 Technical Presentation, Sony’s console Lead Architect Mark Cerny has revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro, detailing the enhanced and more powerful mid-generation upgrade to the PS5.
The presentation also confirms that the PS5 Pro will launch on 7th November 2024, costing $700 / £700 /€800 / ¥120,000. A disc drive is not included, but is an optional £100 add-on. A vertical stand is also an add-on at £25. Pre-orders will go live on 26th September 2024.
The PS5 Pro improves on the base PS5 in every measure. There is a bump in CPU performance, faster RAM, and a big boost to GPU performance up to 45% faster thanks to being 1.6 times the size, which should bring the 4K60 dreams that most gamers seem to have a bit closer to reality. The new generation of GPU will also bring enhanced ray tracing capabilities.
However, native 4K is still going to be pretty unlikely – that’s just no how games work anymore – and so Sony has also developed a custom in-house upscaling technique called PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling). This aims to be best in class, going up against DLSS 3, FSR 3, XeSS and other temporal upscaling techniques.
The intention is to remove the decision between Fidelity and Performance modes. The examples used were of The Last of Us Part 2, Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, giving Fidelity Mode graphics but at double the performance with 60FPS.
Advanced Ray Tracing will allow Gran Turismo 7 to bring ray tracing live in the races, as opposed to locking them to replays. Third party developers are also getting in on the act, with Hogwarts Legacy bringing greater reflections into the world.
Games enhanced for the new console will get a ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ label, while support is being added to:
Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First
